KidCo Extra Tall Center Gateway

KidCo Extra Tall Center Gateway Review

We bought this to fence off an area of the house after one cat started to bully the other.

The gate is easy to install and also easy to move around, if you need to, although it does require a tool to loosen the bolts that keep it tight in the doorway.

We installed ours in a hallway and using the included extension pieces, we have been able to completely block off the other side.

Just in case, we also put a scat mat in front of the gate on one side, in case the more athletic and bullying cat was able to jump from just below it.

The gate's locking mechanism can be a bit fiddly if you just have one hand but it seems very secure and definitely child proof when engaged. As we only have cats to worry about, we don't bother locking it and just close it in place, making it much easier for us to come in and out. There is a lip at the bottom of the gate which engages the lowest bar and that does a good job of securing the gate but you would want to engage the locking handle at the top if you had a stairway to protect from a child.

All in all, not a cheap gate but well constructed and doesn't damage the areas you might install it.

Customer Reviews

Where on earth did this product come from? - E. Stoneham - MD
First, the basics:
- Quality- average
- Look- institutional/ jail-like
- Price- average
- Usefullness- UNK- parts were missing- TERRIBLE shipping preparation (that is why it got 1 star)

The reason for the 1 star? For something this expensive, you might think they would take care in shipping it. It actually looked like it had been a previous return. The packaging was only partially closed, and one side had a tear more than 3/4 way up that someone attempted to tape up. The top and bottom openings were OPEN, and the extensions rattling around in it (I was honestly surprised they made it). Once I got it open, it was immediately clear that critical parts were missing (extension pins and the stoppers (all four) that are supposed to hold it to the walls, and a couple of the corners looked roughed up from being on an open corner where it was dragged around (presumeably in transport). I don't think this is Amazon's doing, but the manufacturer from where it comes (but I could be wrong- it is hard to tell from the description). What a major pain to have to ship it back. I actually tried to tape all the openings really well for the return since I didn't think they would ship it as it was without more secure fastenings (again, how this made it through UPS without them stopping it at the door for poor packaging is beyond me). Incredibly disappointed that this was actually sold as a legitimate 'new item' to a customer. If I could, I would tell Amazon to stop supporting this manufacturer (or store if that is the case). It makes then seem really fly by night. I returned it very recently for a refund (thank god for Amazon's pre-printed return labels!). If I have any problems there, I will update this though.

Great gate for cats - M. Wright - TEXAS
I bought this gate to see if it would keep our 5-year-old, 10-pound cat out of a room we had just remodeled. We have lower gates the keep our two dogs in one area of the house and the cat jumps them with ease, which is OK, but we knew we needed something different if we were going to be able to keep the door open on the new room. This gate works. Installation was easy. After the gate was installed I took some cat food into the new room where the cat could see it and watched to see if he could jump over it. He got his front paws over the top, but he couldn't get traction with his back legs on the round uprights and he just hung there until I rescued him; I laughed my head off. If he can't clear it for food, he won't be able to clear it at all and the new room is safe. That's good; my wife had threatened to run the cat and me both off if the cat marked the new room. We have foot-operated gates on other doors, and those are much easier to use, but I think we will get used to the handle on this gate, and it did seem to be the best of the available choices in tall gates.
