KidCo G20 Black Safeway Wall Mount Top of the Stair Gate

KidCo G20 Black Safeway Wall Mount Top of the Stair Gate Review

I really like the gate. Its a little pricey I think.. but it served my purpose very well. I actually bought two to go on our bedroom and nursery door entrance. I couldn't find a gate that was wide enough to walk thru on a regular basis. My husband is on the hefty side and I figured this would work because it opens almost as wide as the actual door. I did have to adjust it abit to make sure the actual door could also be closed at the same time the gate was closed. It has rather cheap little plastic connectors that connect to the sides. I am afraid someday they might break. However, after putting up the gates and now have been using them for almost two weeks.. I really like them! I can open them with one hand and I can open them in either direction. No problems yet with the connectors. I would highly recommend this gate. Its working perfect for me right now. Not sure how it will handle a small child climbing on it though. It might break the wall connectors.

Perfect for keeping toddlers off the stairs! - Donald Courtright - Valparaiso, IN
I ordered this gate a few months ago and it has been a life saver! My one year old is so curious about the stairs that she always wants to be on them but the gate keeps her from them. She pulls on it and pushes it and it will not budge, it feels strong and secure. On the otherhand, my three year old is confident on the stairs and the latch is easy enough for him to open and close if he needs to. We love it and would use it over a tension gate any day, especially at the stairs. It give me piece of mind when I have to take my eyes off the kids for a sec.

Highly Recommend - World Traveler - Tempe, AZ
Purchased two of these to stop the dogs from going up and down stairs. They were very easy to install (from a wall to a banister). They look very nice and don't make our home look like a jail of plastic. They are very easy to use. I was concerned that it would be difficult to open the gate on the stairs, but they are easy to operate with one hand. They are even easier to close. I recommend these gates over any other.

KidCo Center Gateway Extension Kit

KidCo Center Gateway Extension Kit Review

I purchased this gate to contain a Yorkshire Terrier puppy. Yes, the gate fits a 36 inch door just fine, but a very small puppy can walk right through the extra space beside the gate opening. I needed the kit to close that gap. A child couldn't get through the slighter larger opening that is created between the gate and the wall, but a very small puppy can walk right through.
I like very much how the gate and extension function. I just needed the extension kit.

KidCo Center Gateway Extension Kit Feature

  • One metal extension kit for openings 37 1/4 - 42 3/4 inches
  • One wood extension kit for openings 35 3/4 - 41 1/2 inches
  • Two metal extension kits for openings 42 5/8 - 48 1/8 inches
  • Two wood extension kits for openings 41 1/4 - 47 inches
  • No more than 2 optional extension kits recommended per gate
KidCo Center Gateway Extension Kit Need a little extra on your KidCo Gate? Try the KidCo Center Gate Extension which is made of strong tubular steel and is certainly built to last. Not only will the gate keep a child out of harms way, it will keep the dog out of the way as well. At 29.5 inches tall, the extension for the KidCo child gate will assuredly keep the most curious of children out of the way. The KidCo Center Gate should not use more than two extensions because of safety issues. O

Great Product....HORRIBLE Company! - Krystal Colon -
"DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY! I purchased a gate for (shipping and everything) and was the wrong size. I wanted to exchange it for the next size up, but was told that I would have to pay the original price, a 15% restocking fee and pay to ship it back. All of this would cost more than the gate itself. The rep. was very rude and unwilling to satisfy a devoted customer. Never again."

Not much of an extention - SOGWAP - Somewhere in the USA
I have to admit that this is a good quality as are their gates, but they don't give you much in the way of extention unless you only have to fill just an inch to maybe two and a half. The price was not great for what you get. There are only two bars and it leaves a big gap (my guess is if you have 40 or more inches). I measured my space and it's 42 inches. It should have been fine, but it leaves a big enough gap to fit a small dog. Their manual says 37 1/4"-42 3/4" - One extension kit / 42 5/8"-48 1/8" - Two extension kits. There's no reason why I should have a gap as big as I do, but I do. Also the tension rod doesn't work as well with the extention, as the tension rod with the gate alone. In summary, their extension recommendation measurements are not really that accurate and with this extention, the tension is not that sturdy especially when the gate is left open. In that position, it seems that the tension rod could easily slide off the wall. You can't really make it much tighter. If you want to spend the extra I would get two if your space is more than 40 inches. That will most likely also make the tension tighter. I gave it three stars for quality because it is heavy duty and good quality. They might need to be a bit more accurate about measurements or maybe add an extra rod for the measurements they give.

KidCo Y Spindle (2 Pack)

KidCo Y Spindle (2 Pack) Review

See more picture

It's hard to give a piece of metal anything but 5 stars... what would have helped is a little guidance about how they work and how many you need. Let me spell this out for you, 1 Y-spindle is not enough for 1 side, it is literally 1 Y-spindle. I wondered why anyone might want just 1... well this is what you need to know.

The gate has 4 friction points and comes with flat disks that give good friction to walls or anything else that is flat. So ask yourself, is my spindle rectangular on the bottom 2 inches as it enters the floor/stairs? If rectangular on the bottom, but round at the top, then you'll need 1 Y-spindle for each spindle you are placing the gate between. If your spindle is round top-to-bottom, then you'll need to Y-spindles per side.

I hope this helps someone... I also have some advice about the gate, but I'm putting that with the gate reviews.

KidCo Y Spindle (2 Pack) Feature

  • 2 per pack
  • Allows pressure mounted gates to be attached to spindles
  • Y Spindles are for mounting to a round staircase baluster, usually at the bottom of the stairs
  • No more than two spindles may be used per gate and both must be used on the same side
KidCo Spindle 2 Pack For homes that don't have staircases bordered by walls, the KidCo Y Spindle helps to mount gates. The Y Spindle wraps around the baluster to help provide a secure installation. Spindle helps pressure mounted gates latch onto freestanding staircases. The KidCo Y Spindle comes in packs of 2.

KidCo Elongate

KidCo Elongate Review

This gate is sturdy feeling once it is set up, is easy to put together, and opens in both directions. There is one problem with the gate which is easily fixed. This gate, like many others, has an approximately one inch bar across the bottom of the opening of the gate which you must step over whenever you go through the gate. This is a trip hazard, and the fix is a small plastic ramp that attaches to the bar. If you are using the gate to go in both directions, you have to order two of them, one for each side. I ordered one, expecting it to be two sided, but the company doesn't sell it that way. Also, I have found no easy way of ordering this extremely important "extra" other than calling the company (KidCo) directly.

KidCo Elongate Feature

  • Hardware mounted metal gate
  • For any room in the house
  • Gate is not recommended for top of stairs
  • One hand operation
  • Swings either direction
Here's an innovative gate that's designed to fit the wide-open spaces of your home. Wall-mounted for safety, the Elongate has a walk-through door that can be installed at either end. A release allows the door to swing open in either direction. Constructed of sturdy, tubular steel with a non-toxic plastic coating. Measures 29.5 inches high and fits openings from 48" to 60" wide.

BEWARE -- Gate has serious flaws - Daddy of Twins - Simi Valley, CA
To whomever might be considering purchasing this gate, beware it has several fairly significant design flaws.

We originally purchased this gate because it was one of the few that had approved extensions that could span the top of our staircase.

However, after taking the time to unpack and install it, it has several serious flaws.

1) The device assumes you have no moulding at the baseboards (except potentially 1/4" shoe moulding. To be stable, it requires the use of a plastic 'foot' stablizer, that helps anchor the hinge side of the gate. If you have moulding, you'd either have to screw the mounts directly through the moulding (which ruins the moulding), or attempt to level the gate above the moulding. Unfortunately, this results in the gate not being able to use the stablizer foot, and results in a gate that sways excessively (again, I needed something with multiple extensions).

2) The opening for the gate is very, very small.

3) 1 side of the gate (the side that swings) mounts directly to the wall. This is a problem if you're even a fraction of an inch off with the included paper templates to guide where to mount the brackets.

I don't know how the merchant is going to be when I attempt to return this useless gate...so my comments (for

Great gate- bad packaging - Norman Clark - New York
This is a great product and well made. Unfortunately it arrived without instructions. So I printed them from the KidCo website. That's when I realized pieces were missing. I returned the gate and received another one within a week. This time the template for aligning the screws was not included. Fortunately I figured it out. The gate works well and looks clean and functional.

I would suggest that KidCo pay more attention to what is in the box.

The First Years Hands Free Gate

The First Years Hands Free Gate Review

See more picture

I bought this gate about 2 years ago, when my oldest was one. It has held up very well and is very secure. Now 3, both her and her sister (1 yr) have been caught hanging from the gate. While this is not recommended, I was happy to see it hold up to the weight without breaking open.

As for the construction, the bars and gate mechanisms are sturdy and well constructed. This is at the top of our stairs, contrary to mfg's specs, but we are quite happy with the level of safety this provides.

One note as to why it is not 5 stars: every few months, I need to tighten the gate mechanism by using the provided wrench. I.e. the gate slowly loosens and becomes unhinged at the top. This is not a major safety issue, however, as you should notice the gate getting easier/looser to open long before it is a real concern.

PS - it's nice to have this gate to teach kids that "naughty puppies" (dog who begs too close to the table or barks too loud) can get sent to "puppy jail" (other side of the gate). Makes for a good visual, too. :-)

The First Years Hands Free Gate Feature

  • Foot-pedal operated
  • Gate swings open in both directions
  • Gate will fit openings up to 39" with one extension kit and 44" with two extension kits (sold separately)
  • Pressure-mounted design that won't mar walls or doorways
  • This gate is not intended for use at the top of stairs
Because of its simple "knee-knocker" mechanism, this Hands Free Gate can do exactly what the name implies: be opened without having to use your hands. Any parent occupied with little ones and all of their necessities will quickly recognize this as a huge benefit. To operate, simply press on the pedal with your toes and then bump the knee plate with your knee. Closing is just a nudge in the opposite direction; you will hear a click when the latch has caught, offering peace of mind that it’s secure again.

foot pedal
The convenient foot pedal is easy for adults, but difficult for children, to open.
The pedal, knee plate, and hinges are designed so the gate can swing open from either direction. Even smarter is that the gate is purposely designed as easy-to-open for an adult, yet difficult for children. The gate’s vertical bars curb curious toddlers from trying to climb over, are spaced to help prevent painful accidents, and provide ample visibility through to the other side.

pressure mount
Adjustable pressure mounts don’t require screws and won’t mark up your walls.
Able to fit in standard doorframes (29" to 34" wide), the all-metal safety gate is a pressure-mount device. Just twist the adjustable bolts at each of the four corners to get a proper, secure fit in your doorways. (If you have wider than standard doors, The First Years sells extension kits separately that can accommodate up to 44-inch wide openings.) It should be noted that this safety gate can be a little unsteady when used at the outer limits of its range, so you may want to consider an extension kit even if using in a standard doorway.

Before you buy, there are two things to be aware of. One, the actual opening for parents, kids, and/or pets to walk through is only about 18 inches wide. Two, if you want to use this in a doorway and be able to close the door, the foot pedal sticks out too far to allow this. For use with children up to 24 months.

Rarely does a mom or dad make it through a day without thinking they could use an extra set of hands. So First Years designed the next best thing -- a safety gate that doesn't require any hands at all! But even though it's simple for an adult to just press on the pedal and walk through, it's too difficult for a baby. The gate fits all standard doorways 29" to 34" wide, and, with use of the Gate Extension Kit (sold separately) will also fit other openings up to 44" wide. The pressure-mounted design won't damage walls or doorways. An audible click lets you know the gate has locked.

Gate broke after 6 weeks, video review on breakage - A. Schroeder - Cave Creek, AZ United States
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R38Z3KZ0W3CSS0 One caveat to my 2 star review: I purchased this as a dog gate, and not a baby gate. Though I do have two small children (3 and 6, out of the baby gate stage), perhaps it was not used as intended, and maybe they were too rough on the gate trying to open it? It's basically impossible for anyone under 6 to operate this because they aren't heavy enough to push on the pedal. Even for adults, you have to push pretty hard to pop the gate mechanism open.

That being said, the gate broke after just 2 months of use and you can see on my video review exactly where the gate broke. I started recording the video when the gate began coming apart, and by the end of the review it was totally broken/separated. I had several gates when my children were babies a few years ago, and this was my *least* favorite of all of them.

Very well made, allows for you to carry items. - Kristine M. Hanson - long beach, california United States
I LOVE this gate. The quality is far beyond what I had expected, and the foot pedal allows for me to hold a baby, bottle, and anything else in my arms while I open.

KidCo Angle-Mount Safeway Gate

KidCo Angle-Mount Safeway Gate Review

See more picture

This is a very good gate for the right circumstances. It's almost a great gate.

PROs:
- It can be installed in situations where the latch isn't directly across from the hinges. It's one of the few (maybe the only?) gate that works in that situation. We used it in a circumstance where a doorway prevented the use a normal gate that requires a 90 degree mounting.
- As it's screwed to the wall, you don't have a bar running across the floor that you have to step (or trip) over.
- Once installed, it's pretty easy to use with one hand. My 6 year old has no trouble using it. But it's too complicated for our toddler to figure out (which is good!).
- Overall, it seems quite durable. I have some concerns about the long-term durability of the latch mechanism, but after a month of heavy use it's holding up quite well.

CONs:
- Believe all of the other reviews stating that it's more complicated to put together than it needs to be. A little more design work could have simplified things.
- To open the gate you slide back a spring-loaded plastic piece with your thumb while lifting the whole gate up an inch or so. It's actually easy to do with one hand, as I state above. But sometimes the plastic piece is a bit too slippery to easily pull back with your thumb. A little better design would have created a piece that was easier to grab with a thumb, even when slippery.
- It doesn't self close or self latch, both of which could have been designed in easily enough. To latch it you have to lift the whole gate up while pulling it closed and then it drops down into a sort of latch on top and socket on bottom.
- Sometimes the bottom will actually pull past the socket on the bottom and not drop into it. That's not really a problem. However, it is also possible for the top to sometimes go past the latch and end up on the wrong side. That's a much bigger problem since to get it back on the correct side you have to dismantle the latch. (This has happened to us maybe 2-3 times in a month of use.) Making the latch components out of metal, which doesn't have as much "give" as the plastic, probably would have prevented this.
- As another reviewer noted, if you order the black gate all of the hardware is silver. This is unfortunate since it ruins anotherwise nice appearance. I haven't tried, but I'm sure it would be pretty difficult to find these pieces in black at any hardware store. (When was the last time you saw a black binder screw? Heck, I best a lot of folks just Googled "binder screw" to find out what one is! :) They're that unusual.)
- Of course, screwing to the wall (the only installation option) means you'll leave holes there when your child grows up and you remove it.

Overall, it's the best and perhaps only gate that will work in some situations. I'm hoping KidCo will take some of these comments to heart and improve the next version. A few changes could make this a really great child/pet gate.

Challenging setup, but works great after - Jacob Sorensen - Hillsboro, OR USA
This gate is very flexible in terms of situations where you can set it up (like our landing where it needs to be diagonal when closed), but that means there are more parts to configure when you're setting it up. The directions are pretty good, but leave out a couple of key pieces of information. I had to put them aside for a bit, look at the pieces and ask myself "how do these things look like they should fit together?"

I did get it put together and installed, and after some adjusting it works great! Even our four year old can open and close it without trouble, and it does a good job keeping the one year old from tumbling down the stairs. It is easy to take off the mounts for the evenings when you don't want to worry about it and the one year old is asleep. The lower hinge did start squeaking after several weeks, but some petroleum jelly cleared that up easily enough. So, while this product isn't perfect, it's a very solid product we're glad we purchased.

We bought this for our 2 yr old who wanted to get in and out of the tub by himself. Although it serves its purpose very well, please be sure that your tub does not have a lip at the top or slant in the upper 4-6 inches or else it won't work well, if at all.

It makes a nice sturdy grip for our son and makes bathtime much safer in our house. It supports him with no problems, but is NOT made for adults. It installs very quickly and comes off easily for cleaning. It has been almost a year and the suction cups are still going strong and it still looks new.

Overall, it has been a wonderful addition to our home. A great product.

Good concept, poor design - MelP - Colorado
We bought this to help our kids get in and out of the tub w/out getting hurt. The concept is great, but the design is horrid. You have to line the cups up and hold your tongue just right to even get them to stick for more than a minute in the first place. The suction cups just aren't strong enough, my 25 lb 2 yr old could torque it enough to break the suction and he liked to play w/the tabs and pop them lose while he was in the tub.
